Taking note of an increasing number of cases of government servants altering their birth dates frequently, the government has issued a fresh notification warning head of departments not to approve any change in birth dates of any employee who has completed five years in government service.

Under Secretary personnel Shashank Thakur in a notification issued on April 1 has warned head of departments that they will be personally held liable and action shall initiated if they approve any alteration of date of birth after five years of employees joining government service.

It may recalled that government in a notification issued in August 2000 had specified some conditions for alteration of birth dates.

As per the fresh notification a government servant can alter his/her birth date before completion of five years of entry in government service provided they establish that there is a genuine mistake in the earlier birth date.

Many employees are reported to have changed their birth dates without following conditions in the notification with the active blessings of the Head of Departments.

In a bid to crack down on this malpractice, the government has issued a fresh notification to all head of departments to abide by the rules.
