Govt likely to discontinue subsidy on EVs from Aug 1

PANAJI
The much touted push to encourage buying of electric vehicles (EVs) in a bid to reduce fuel emissions may be ended from August 1 this year by the State government.

A proposal to discontinue the subsidy scheme for purchase of EVs under which various incentives were offered by the State government has been processed by the Department of New and Renewable Energy.

The scheme “Promotion of Electric Vehicle in the State of Goa” according to sources in the department is expected to be valid only up to July 31.

Power Minister Ramkrishna Dhavalikar, who holds the portfolio, however, said a final decision on the matter lies with Chief Minister Pramod Sawant.

“Because of the code of conduct which is in force on account of the panchayat elections the matter is pending with the chief minister. He will take the decision,” Dhavalikar said.

The minister however did not give any reason why the government has taken this abrupt decision.
