Cooperation Minister Govind Gawde on Monday said the State government could intervene if talks on a possible merger fail between Mapusa Urban Cooperative Bank (MUCB), Punjab Maharashtra Sahakari Bank and TJSB.
Speaking to reporters along the sidelines of a function at the bank, Gaude said since the MUCB is under the purview of the Central Cooperatives Registrar and not under the control of the State Registrar, the State government cannot directly intervene in the matter at present.
“At present, merger talks are underway between the Mapusa Urban Cooperative Bank, Punjab Maharashtra Sahakari Bank and TJSB. If these talks fail, the State government may step in and try to give justice to account holders and stakeholders of MUCB,” said Gaude.
The MUCB has about 2.48 lakh account holders and all are Goans. The State government has written a letter to the central cooperative registrar seeking details about the MUCB.
Meanwhile, Gaude informed that there are plans to set up a library in the old Mapusa municipality building.
“We will inspect the building along with local MLA Joshua D’Souza and Mapusa municipal officials next month. After inspecting the site, we will decide whether the building needs to be renovated or rebuilt,” said Gaude.
The minister also said the Mapusa Municipal Council is yet to hand over the old municipal building to the art and culture department.
“Once the building is handed over to the art and culture department, restoration work work will be conducted,” the minister said.
