Govt moots more autonomy for municipalities, city corporation

PANAJI

In an effort to bring about greater accountability on the part of local bodies, the State government is toying with the idea of enabling the municipalities and the city corporation to function independently.

During an event in Panaji on Wednesday, the Minister for Urban Development, Vishwajit Rane, announced the government’s plans to introduce a bill in the upcoming assembly session to grant more power to the CCP and municipalities, enabling them to function independently. However, the Minister did not elaborate on what he intends to propose in a bid to make the local bodies self-sustainable.

He commended Safai Karmacharis, pointing out that their work often goes unrecognised and that they deserve more respect and appreciation for their contributions.

Meanwhile, Mapusa Municipal Council was awarded first place, and the Corporation of the City of Panaji received second position in the Cleanliness Target Unit Transformed category.

Canacona and Mormugao Municipal Councils were recognised for their efforts in the Swachhata Hi Bhagidari category, securing 1st and 2nd place, respectively.
