The State government has given a green signal to higher secondary schools and colleges to increase the number of seats for class XI and first year in this academic year considering the high passing percentage in board exams.
“We have allowed to increase seating capacity for students wanting to enroll in class XI and first year as the passing percentage has gone up this year,” said Chief Minister Pramod Sawant.
On the request of the members of the House, the CM also assured to increase the seating capacity for vocational students.
Raising the issue at the Zero Hour, St Cruz MLA Tony Fernandes said several students passed with low percentage and were finding it difficult to get admission in colleges due to higher passing cutout.
“Several parents are approaching us for admission. We need to increase seats in colleges,” Fernandes said.
Porvorim MLA, Rohan Khaunte also said that there was demand for vocational courses and requested to increase the seats for vocational classes.
The chief minister assured the House to also increase the seating capacity for vocational classes.
It may be recalled, the Goa Board did not conduct final exams for both Class X and Class XII students this year. It had adopted an alternative scheme for evaluating both Class X and Class XII students.
The passing percentage of both Class X and Class XII board exams was over 99 percent.
Close to cent percent of the class XII students cleared theHSSC exam declared by the Goa Board. 99.40 per cent of the students cleared the exam, a whopping 10.13 percentage points higher than last year.
Only 110 students of the 18,195 registered were declared unsuccessful but some of them were placed in the “needs improvement” category
Students who were not satisfied with their results were given the
option of answering exam but told to “forfeit” this result.
The HSSC exam this year was cancelled due to the spurt in Covid-19 infections in April-May.
