In the wake of the tragic death of Narayan Abhyankar, Goa’s Under Secretary in the Law Department, the district administration has swung into action, announcing a series of immediate road safety and improvement measures at the accident site along NH-66 in Guirim.
North Goa District Magistrate Ankit Yadav (IAS) has directed the installation of rumblers on the national highway leading to Porvorim and on the adjoining service road, specifically at the merger point where Abhyankar lost his life earlier this week. The move aims to alert motorists and reduce speed at the critical junction.
In addition to the rumblers, the administration has also ordered key road infrastructure enhancements in the area. As per the District Magistrate’s directions, the eastern side of the service road – from Mapusa to Porvorim – will be widened up to its merger point with the highway.
Further, the stretch of NH-66 from the merger point to Mr Farmers Nursery is also slated for widening.
To enhance visibility and improve traffic flow, the installation of delineators along a 50-metre stretch from the merger point has also been mandated. Overgrown roadside bushes from the Green Park underpass up to Mr Farmers Nursery will be cleared to improve driver visibility and reduce accident risks.
The Public Works Department (PWD) has been instructed to put up appropriate signboards at designated spots as per standard specifications to further ensure road safety.
These interventions come as part of the administration’s immediate response to growing concerns over road safety following a spate of accidents on Goa’s highways.
