Govt ready to bring strict laws to curb drunk driving: CM

MAPUSA

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Monday said that the government was seized of the issue of rising accidental cases in the State and was ready to make traffic laws more stringent to tackle rash and drunken driving.

Sawant also appealed to locals and tourists to follow the rules and laws of the State.

“If we start stopping each and every vehicle, then people start pointing fingers at us. All Goans and tourists who come here should follow the laws of the State. Nobody should indulge in rash and drunk driving. We have been implementing the traffic rules very strictly and are ready to make the rules more stringent,” Sawant said.

Sawant was reacting to the ghastly road accident in Banastarim which claimed the life of three persons and critically injuring four others.

Raising the issue during the Zero Hour, Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao said the rising number of fatal accidents had raised a cause of concern amongst the people of Goa.

“The fatal accident at Banastarim has brought to the fore complete failure of the law and order authority to monitor and control rash driving and breaking motor vehicles rule and traffic guidelines,” Alemao said.

He said lives of innocent families were getting shattered and therefore the government needed to strictly enforce rules and take stringent action against the violators.

The CM said the Banastarim accident cannot be termed as law and order problem, but all the same government was ready to make laws more stringent to curb road mishaps.
