Name of post office at South Collectorate changed after decade

MARGAO

After over a decade, the post office opened at the Matanhy Saldanha Administrative complex in the South Goa Collectorate which was named Gandhi Market Complex Post Office has been finally changed to the name South Goa Collectorate Sub Office.

When the Collectorate was inaugurated over a decade ago, the postal department opened a post office in the complex by shifting the sub-post office from the Gandhi market to the Matanhy Saldanha Administrative complex.

Since then, the post office at the Collectorate was named GMC SO, leaving the consumers and the users of postal services confused.

GOACAN has welcomed the Gandhi Market Complex Post Office name change as a victory of consumer power. GOACAN Coordinator Roland Martins informed that the post office named "Gandhi Market Complex SO" will now be changed to "South Goa Collectorate SO".

He recalled that the postal authorities in their effort to provide postal services at the newly launched Matanhy Saldanha Administrative Complex at Margao, had shut down the Gandhi Market Complex Sub Office and shifted the same by calling it "GMC Sub Office".

“This resulted in a lot of confusion, as many senior citizens visited it mistaking the same to be an extension counter of Goa Medical College for South Goa. Seeing the distress caused to senior citizens, GOACAN launched a campaign for the change in name. Although a formal resolution was passed by the Post Forum of Margao Head Post Office in February 2022, the same was not acted upon by the Senior Postal officials in Panaji,” he said.

He added: “GOACAN then intensified its campaign with a formal complaint in the official complaint book of the post office on October 18, 2022, which was blocked by some officials who were afraid of their lethargy being exposed. On June 18, 2023, on the occasion of Goa Revolution Day, the announcement by GOACAN of its plans to start a mass letter campaign to the Post Master General (PMG) and the Members of Parliament demanding the change in the name of the Post Office had its desired effect.”

Martins has appealed to the consumers facing problems at Post Offices in Goa to write their complaints in the complaint book provided in the respective post offices and send copies of the same by email to [email protected].
