Congress MLA Reginaldo Lourenco on Friday appealed to the government to focus on fighting the present surge of Covid-19, fearing that Goa too will move towards total disaster of health care on the pandemic direction.
In a statement, he said the Covid-19 cases are increasing in Goa but added that the State government has not paid any heed to the warnings of a surge in the second Covid wave striking the State. “Like the previous wave of last year where States like Delhi, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Gujarat were the most affected, similar is the pattern of the present surge, but our State government is not paying any attention to these health warnings,” he said.
“Our State government refused to listen to the people by putting restrictions on tourists/ visitors coming from these most Covid affected States like Maharashtra, Delhi, Karnataka and Gujarat. The norms of wearing of mask and maintaining social distancing no more matters to the authorities in Goa. The casinos of Goa are running in full swing despite the surge. Similarly, the night life continues without any stoppage in Calangute, Candolim, Baga, etc,” he added.
Saying that Covid cases have shot up in his home village of Curtorim to 100, Reginaldo claimed there’s a shortage of oxygen in the Covid hospitals. “In GMC itself there are more than 25 admissions each day and the State is recording increasing number of deaths. There is shortage of beds in GMC for Covid patients,” he said, adding ‘despite warnings by the Medical fraternity that Plasma therapy is not of much benefit to Covid-19 patients, the GMC still continues with the said treatment’.
“It is sad that Dr Edwin Gomes who was instrumental in setting up the Goa’s specialised Covid facility at the ESI Hospital in 2020 has been kept out from Covid care,” he said.
