Saying that Goa should take a leaf from Supreme Court on the preservation of green cover, Congress MLA Reginaldo Lourenco has pointed out to Chief Minister Pramod Sawant that green cover in almost all Panchayats, Municipal areas is being systematically destroyed by powerful builder lobby who mostly are non-Goans and possess only one motto to mint money by bribing officials.

While congratulating the state government led by the “responsive” CM Dr Pramod Sawant for withdrawing Section 144 of Cr P C imposed in North Goa District recently and also rescinding the draconian order notifying 56 villages including Curtorim and Raia in Curtorim Constituency as urban areas, Reginaldo requested the Chief minister to take out a leaf from the observation of the Apex Court against the cutting of trees, a destructive activity which incidentally has engulfed pan Goa too and can be seen with the construction of the NH 17 bypass work, construction of National Highway 4 lane roads, construction of MOPA airport, construction of Zuari Bridge, construction of Atal Setu etc.

“The recent grave expression highlighted by the Supreme Court on the diminishing of forest cover due to the axing of the trees for an infrastructure project is a timely reminder to the authorities at all the three levels be it the Central government, be it the State government and be it the local self-government for prioritising the need of corrective course of action on irresponsible environmental unfriendly developmental agendas pursued by them”, he said.

“It is sad that the top officers, including Collector, Deputy Collector, Mamlatdar seem helpless to stop the wanton destruction of Goa’s ecology including the axing of trees, cutting of hills and polluting of water bodies. As we have bequeathed Goa’s pristine beauty from our ancestors it is the responsibility of each Goemkar to save our State’s pristine natural beauty for our posterity”, he added.
