Growing number of old-age homes in Goa a concern, says Girls Islamic Organisation

MARGAO

Expressing concern over the growing number of old-age homes in Goa, the Girls Islamic Organization (GIO) on Saturday launched an awareness programme with a plea to the children to take care of their parents in their old age.

Joining the GIO in front of the Margao Municipal Council building was women’s rights activist Auda Viegas, who also made a fervent plea to the children to look after their parents during their sunset years.

Auda pointed out that the awareness programme conducted by GIO was the need of the hour. “More number of old-age homes are being opened up in Goa and across the country and this is a matter of concern. Our old parents needs love and affection during their sunset years. They should  be treated like young children. Old-age homes are not the place for the aged,” Auda said and complimented GIS for their initiative to spread awareness amongst the younger generation to  look after their parents.

Zeba Khan Pathan told the media that the organisation was making a plea to the youngsters to treat their ageing parents with respect.

As part of its initiative, GIO has organised several programmes across the state, most in the schools to spread awareness amongst the school students and conduct surveyes. “There are around 150 old-age homes in Goa. We have to ensure that the aged live in peace,” Zeba added.
