A team of Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) members on Thursday descended at Varca to collect water samples from the Varca creek and the adjoining water bodies.
Officials of the GSPCB conducted the inspection and collected the water samples following a complaint lodged by Varca resident Warren Alemao, alleging that the Varca creek and the water bodies have been left polluted and contaminated by the disposal of raw sewage water by the hotels.
While thanking the GSPCB team for visiting the site within three hours of lodging a complaint with the Board, Warren told the media that the local authorities are yet to make their presence felt at the creek for an inspection.
Warren has pointed accusing fingers at some of the hotels for discharging raw sewage water into the Varca creek, leaving the water body highly contaminated. “Strong sewage odour is emanating from the creek since the last couple of days, indicating the raw sewage has found its way into the water body from the hotels,” he said.
Warren has urged the GSPCB to compile the report on the water samples collected from the creek and initiate necessary action against the culprits.
