MARGAO
In a development which may raise questions on the Black Hole technology suggested as a possible answer to Sonsodo woes, the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) has picked holes in the technology by raising a host of questions on the efficacy of the project.
That’s not all. The GSPCB is believed to have recommended the Black Hole technology for the Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim as a pilot project to treat and dispose the waste generated in the State’s premiere hospital before the technology is being used to treat mounds of waste such as Sonsodo.
Even as the Margao Municipal Council has convened a special meeting on Tuesday to discuss the Black Hole technology, The Goan understands that the Black Hole technology has not yet received a nod from the GSPCB, raising questions whether
the Margao Council can go ahead with the technology without the Pollution Board’s permission.
The Black Hole technology plant at Bengaluru, sources in the Pollution Control Board say was inspected by GSPCB Chairman Ganesh Shetgaonkar and Member Secretary Levinson Martins, and the duo is believed to have returned home disappointed and raising a host of queries on the efficacy of the plant to meet the requirements of Sonsodo waste dumping site.
Sources in the GSPCB said when the Pollution Board Chairman and Member Secretary visited the site at Bengaluru, the plant was not operating at its full capacity. The duo are believed to have raised queries over the disposal of the inert items generated by the Black Hole technology plant.
It is believed that the GSPCB has raised a host of queries and the company is yet to get back to the Board with concrete answers. “The Pollution Board has recommended the technology to the GMC taking into account that the technology works on the principles of incineration. At Sonsodo, the issues are huge and the company needs to answer the host of queries before the Board gives the nod for the Black Hole technology,” sources in the Pollution Board informed.
Incidentally, a delegation of Margao Municipality led by Municipal Chairperson Babita Angle Prabhudesai had visited the plant site at Bengaluru, with the Chairperson later terming the technology as very interesting.
