MAPUSA
The Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) has issued a show-cause notice to two two-wheeler service centres/showrooms in Mapusa for operating without the mandatory consent to operate permission.
The facilities are linked to a senior Mapusa-based politician, who is reportedly a partner in the firm managing the establishments.
The notice was served to M/s Crystal Tradelinks, which operates the KTM service station at Kamat Gardens, Dattawadi, Mapusa, and the Chetak service station at the Mapusa Industrial Estate.
According to the GSPCB, both establishments failed to comply with the provisions of the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974.
The board’s Member Secretary, Shamila Monteiro, stated that the service centres neither applied for nor obtained the required consent to operate. Additionally, the establishments failed to install generator sets, a legal requirement under the applicable regulations.
The Board initiated action following complaints about the unauthorised operation of the facilities. Officials conducted inspections of both units four months ago and confirmed non-compliance with pollution control norms.
In the notice, the GSPCB directed the management to explain why operations at both service centres should not be suspended or closed for violating the law. The management has been given a 15-day deadline to respond to the notice. Failure to do so will result in closure proceedings.
The case highlights the need for stricter adherence to environmental laws, especially among commercial establishments.
The GSPCB’s action underscores its commitment to enforcing compliance in the state.
