The Goa Women’s Forum (GWF) protested against overcharging at pay toilets of the KTC bus-stand in the city and demanded immediate action by authorities responsible for its management.
GWF, which held the protest on Friday to commemorate ‘World Consumer Rights Day’ has demanded that KTCL fix boards displaying the charges for use of the toilets. It also demanded that female attendants for the ladies toilet and proper uniform for them.
The organisation alleged that the male attendent illegally charges Rs 5/- and Rs 10/- for use of the facility by women, and if questioned, behaves rudely. This overcharging of users of the pay toilet has been going on for a long time, they alleged.
GWF volunteers with black flags and displaying posters protested and expressed their determination to get disciplinary action against the contractor appointed by KTCL to manage the public toilets there.
The initial protests by GWF and a large number of complaints recorded in the complaints book had resulted in the termination of the Contractor in December 2018. However, with the appointment of a new Contractor, the situation has not shown much improvement, GWF claimed.
The agitating women have also demanded signages indicatin the telephone number & email id for routing complaints.
KTCL has proposed a hike in urinal charges from Rs 1 to Rs 2. GWF volunteers met the Corporation’s representative Vishnu Shetgaonkar and demanded that the proposed hike be immediately rolled back.
The high prices leads to men defecating in the open instead of using the pay toilet, they added.
