Goa waste management Corporation (GWMC) Chairman Sanjit Rodrigues on Thursday informed media that the only solution to clear garbage heap at Garbage treatment plants was to have a segregated door-to-door collection of garbage from houses.

“We have one philosophy with which waste management in Goa is progressing and that is the zero landfill and zero waste campaign. Many Municipalities have achieved good success and they are actually segregating at source at 100 per cent. While a few Municipalities are lagging behind. We have given and are willing to give all kind of support the Vasco Municipality but they have, to at their level, to do door-to-door segregated garbage Collection. Municipality solid waste management rules 2016 have changed and door-to-door collection and segregation at source is become compulsory. If these two things are not adopted by the municipality then further process of recycling, composting will not be possible. This is the only solution,” said Rodrigues.

“Many municipalities are doing this. Even panchayats have begun segregation and recycling. This must happen in Vasco municipality and only then the mountains of waste or fire due to methanation will not happen. The success of any local body lies in segregating waste at source. We are giving all kinds of assistance in terms of technology and support. The basic functions of a local body to collect waste in a segregated manner has to be done by them. Till this is achieved, I don’t think any local body will achieve any success in dealing with the garbage issue,” added

Rodrigues.

GWMC Chairman also informed that a new garbage treatment facility, on the lines of the one in Saligao, was coming up in Curchorem. He also said that dry waste segregation facility is set up at Bicholim which will cater to Bicholim and Sattari Taluka. Besides a bailing of dry waste facility at Verna. He strongly urged the segregation

of garbage.
