Old Goa police on Wednesday arrested a habitual offender for a house-breaking theft at Merces, in which jewellery worth around Rs 10 lakh was stolen.
Details shared by Superintendent of Police (North) Rahul Gupta revealed the accused, identified as Anant aka Akshya Mhadeshwar, aged 32 years and a native of neighbouring Sindhudurg district (Maharashtra), was arrested for the offence.
As per the FIR, the incident occurred between the evening of August 28 and the early hours of August 29, when unidentified persons broke into a Merces flat and decamped with a mangalsutra, bangles, earrings, rings and silver ornaments.
“Based on CCTV footage, our team traced a suspect moving in the area on a two-wheeler. The accused, identified as Anant Mhadeshwar, a labourer residing in Merces and a native of Kudal, Sindhudurg, was apprehended,” Gupta said, adding the accused confessed to committing the theft by entering the flat through a window. He was subsequently arrested.
The SP further stated that a check on the Interoperable Criminal Justice System (ICJS) revealed that Mhadeshwar is a habitual offender involved in a series of house-breaking thefts in Maharashtra and Goa.
Some of these cases led to his conviction, and his involvement in other theft cases in Goa is being verified.
