A day after the Archdiocese of Goa & Daman requested the Health services to hand over part of the old Hospicio hospital building to start a healthcare centre at the heritage building, the Action Committee for Hospicio hospital on Wednesday made a fervent plea to the government to accede to the Church request to set up a healthcare centre to cater to the health needs of the community irrespective of caste, creed and religion.
Addressing the media, the Action Committee member Alexio Pacheco pointed out that the Archdiocese has set in motion the process with the government to hand over part of Hospicio building, besides the Chapel inside the complex keeping in mind the sentiments of the citizens attached to the great institution started by Padre Miranda.
The committee members have feared that the Hospicio building may collapse for want of upkeep and maintenance, adding that the proposed healthcare centre at the building will help maintain the rich history of the institution.
Another committee member Savio Coutinho remarked: “Hospicio has a rich history. Since Hospicio has been shifted to the South Goa district hospital, we feel sad over the neglect of the heritage building. There’s no one around to look after the upkeep of the building. Since the Archdiocese has given a proposal to the Health Department, it is our request and not a demand that the government hand over part of the building to the Church to set up the health centre,” Coutinho informed.
He said the Archdiocese will complete the required formalities so that the health centre becomes a reality and cater to the needs of the citizens.
Pacheco said the Archdiocese has only asked for a part of the Hospicio building, adding that the Church-run institution Caritas will take care of the healthcare centre. “The main focus is on healthcare for all the communities of Goa, irrespective of caste and creed. Our Constitution gives the right to live and right to healthcare,” he added.
“Members of the committee have no self-interest, but have come together to do certain things for the community,” he said.
