MMC Chairperson Babita Angle Prabhudesai told the media after a meeting held to discuss the problem of thermocol waste that the civic body would soon approach the government asking it to hand over the wholesale market to the municipality since the South Goa Planning and Development Authority has failed in its maintenance. The meeting chaired by Babita and attended by Margao traffic PI Mohan Gawde, Margao PSI Girendra Naik, MMC Chief Officer Y B Tawde, president of the wholesale fish market association M Ibrahim, discussed at length the issue of thermocol waste left behind on the road leading to the wholesale fish market by the outstation fish merchants. Ibrahim told the meeting that the wholesale fish market has already banned the use of thermocol inside the market, adding that the fish merchants and the transporters are now leaving the waste on the roads. Taking serious cognizance of the problem, the MMC chairperson said while the civic body will approach the government to provide a machine to treat the thermocol waste, the existing waste will be transported to SGPDA market. “The SGPDA will then take the responsibility of lifting away the waste. The thermocol waste is a big menace faced by citizens outside the wholesale fish market. I have also asked the Chief Officer to depute municipal staff to crack a whip against the illegal vendors blocking traffic on the road in the morning,” she added.
