Asserting that he has throughout his political career fully backed the bullfight sport in the state, Benaulim MLA Churchill Alemao said he has urged Chief Minister Pramod Sawant to pass a bill in the Assembly in support of it.
Churchill said he will move the bill in the ensuing session of the Assembly if time permits in support of bullfights.
“I have discussed the issue with Chief Minister Pramod Sawant. I have impressed upon him that bull sport has been permitted in the Southern state of Tamil Nadu. The Tamil Nadu government passed an amendment to the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, a central law. The amendment was approved by the President of India and jallikattu events were permitted again. If Tamil Nadu can do it so can the Goa government,” he said.
When questioned why he has decided to demand a Bill on bullfights at the fag end of the Assembly term, Churchill shot back, “I have been collecting the details, including details on the amendment passed by Tamil Nadu. Bullfights in Goa are necessary to preserve the cultural tradition of Goa and Goans,” he added.
