The High Court of Bombay at Goa has expressed concern over the growing volume of litigation arising from extensions granted to government officials beyond their retirement age, observing that the issue has led to numerous legal disputes across departments.
Hearing a batch of petitions challenging such extensions, the court questioned whether any government department had remained untouched by the issue.
“There is a huge amount of litigation before us,” the court observed, highlighting the scale of disputes arising from the extension of service beyond retirement.
The court also noted that each department would have to be examined individually to determine the circumstances surrounding the extensions granted to its officials.
Government counsel submitted that granting extensions beyond retirement had been a widespread practice in the past, but maintained that the practice had been curtailed in recent times.
The petitions challenge government decisions allowing officials to continue in service beyond the prescribed retirement age, raising questions about the circumstances and justification for granting such extensions.
The High Court has scheduled the matter for a detailed hearing on January 19, 2027.
