Subhash ready to back ST candidate if Sanguem is reserved

SANGUEM

Social Welfare Minister and Sanguem MLA Subhash Phal Dessai has expressed willingness to support a BJP candidate from the ST community if Sanguem is reserved for STs ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, he said he would abide by the decisions of Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, state BJP president Damu Naik and the party’s central leadership. He would also accept an organisational role or contest from another constituency if directed. He said the BJP would assess the political situation and conduct surveys before deciding on its candidate and his future role.

Phal Dessai backed ST political reservation as a long-pending, legitimate demand and highlighted infrastructure improvements in remote and tribal villages.

The possibility of reservation has unsettled local BJP workers, with nearly 300 reportedly visiting his residence on Wednesday seeking clarity.

He urged workers to remain calm and respect the constitutional process, pledging to work for a BJP victory irrespective of reservation status.
