The Bombay High Court at Goa has asked government to file a response on the garbage situation in the State even as Advocate General Dattaprasad Lawande sought to inform the former about the latter's initiatives on garbage and plans to set up two additional plants on the lines of the one set up in Saligao.
The court, which is hearing a public interest litigation petition filed by a law student Barbara Andrade, sought to know the why -- if the government has measures in place -- the situation was bad at the Divja circle in Panaji as depicted by the petitioner.
Don't tell us how many trucks you have and what are their hours of operation. If everything was fine, the situation would not be one that was as depicted in the photographs, the court said.
The court also sought to know the government's policy on plastic, waste segregation and importantly what is the penal provisions that the State has in place for panchayats and local bodies that are not complying with the solid waste management rules or any state policy in that regard. A petition by Andrade against the Corporation of the City of Panaji for failing to tackle the city's garbage problem, with special mention of the stench at the Divja circle has been taken up by the Division Bench of the Bombay High Court at Goa.
The court in an interim order has and tagged it along with Suo Motu Writ Petition filed back in 2007 over the garbage problem across of Goa.
