The Bombay High Court at Goa has taken serious cognizance of the poor and unhygienic condition of the Margao wholesale fish market and has asked the South Goa Planning and Development Authority to file a status report on an action plan they plan to take to remedy the situation.
On Monday when the matter came up for hearing, the Goa State Pollution Control Board filed an inspection report concerning SGPDA's wholesale and retail fish market which revealed a ‘disturbing situation.'
“The observations in this report are quite disturbing. Neither the SGPDA which is operating the market nor the MMC appear to be taking any concrete steps to either prevent unauthorised littering or discharge of waste water in drains and fields,” the Bombay High Court bench of Justices M S Sonak and Bharat Deshpande observed.
“The GSPCB's report suggests that even the ETP was not operational at the time of inspection... even the consent to operate has expired and still, the SGPDA, which is a public authority, continues with its operation,” the court noted.
The Bench then asked the SGPDA which operates the market to “appear in the court along with the necessary information and an action plan” and posted the matter for hearing on September 13.
The High Court also directed that the Margao Wholesale Fish Market Association Margao be made respondents in the petition.
