In response to rising concerns over potential contamination and irreversible damage caused by a multi-dwelling project’s septic tanks, a joint inspection will be conducted by the Health Officer of the Primary Health Centre in Siolim and the Oxel panchayat.
This action follows a complaint filed by over 200 Oxel residents. The inspection is scheduled to take place on Saturday, July 6, at 11 am near the Oxel Spring.
Residents have been demanding an immediate halt to all construction activities and the demolition of existing structures, calling for the land to be restored to its original state.
They argue that the project is illegal, falling within the riparian flow of the spring water and its catchment area.
The Oxel community has made numerous written appeals to various authorities, including the Oxel Panchayat, the Water Resources Department, the Public Works Department (PWD), the Deputy Town Planner in Mapusa, and the Chief Town Planner in Panaji.
Despite these efforts, no decisive action has been taken.
During a previous protest meeting dubbed “Save Oxel Spring,” the Sarpanch of Oxel Panchayat had pledged to issue a “work stop order” and revoke all permissions for the multi-dwelling project near the heritage spring.
An initial inspection conducted by the Sarpanch revealed that the road width was approximately 4 metres, falling short of the mandatory minimum of 6 meters.
However, the Sarpanch later reneged on this commitment, citing various reasons.
Residents are particularly worried about the potential contamination of the Oxel Spring, which is a vital water source for the community.
They argue that the proximity of septic tanks from the multi-dwelling project poses a serious health hazard, potentially polluting the spring water.
The upcoming inspection is seen as a critical step in addressing the residents’ concerns.
The community remains hopeful that the joint inspection by the Health Officer and the Oxel panchayat will lead to concrete actions to halt the controversial project and protect the Oxel Spring from further damage.
