Movement of heavy vehicles will be banned along the Goa-Belgavi highway via Chorla from Tuesday, while police teams will be deployed at various locations to enforce the ban.
At a special meeting convened by the Sattari Mamlatdar Dasharath Gawas in absence of Deputy Collector Rajesh Azgaonakar on Monday, it was decided to implement the directives of the North Goa collector immediately.
Those present at the meeting included inspectors of the Valpoi police, Bicholim police and Bicholim Traffic Police, Valpoi PWD official Devendra Velingkar and Junior Engineer Jilbarao Desai.
The poor condition of the Goa-Belagavi highway on account of heavy vehicles and frequent mishaps along the route had been highlighted in the media.
Taking note of these issues, the North Goa collector had issued an order banning movement of heavy vehicles along the route from November 1.
A meeting on measures to implement the ban was discussed at a meeting on Monday. A special police squad will be deployed at Honda and Sankhali-Vithalapur to enforce the ban on heavy vehicles proceeding from Goa to Belagavi, while a police team will be stationed at Surla to monitor traffic plying from Belagavi to Goa.
The PWD officials have been directed to put up notice boards in this regard.
When contacted, Mamletdar Dasharath Gawas said the North Goa collector’s order will be strictly enforced.
Incidentally, a similar order had been issued by the North Goa collector in the first week of June, but heavy vehicles had not adhered to the order and as a result, the highway further deteriorated during the rains.
