Growing resentment over movement of heavy vehicles through a residential colony has prompted angry locals of Vidyanagar-Sancoale to complain to the police after tension ran high in the area on Tuesday night.
The incident took place when the Sancoale Deputy Sarpanch Nandini Desai noticed a trailer, mounted with a crane, dangerously trying to make way through the colony roads.
Desai also noticed that overhead electrical wires were being damaged and there was a huge traffic jam, as the trailer was trying to make way through the internal roads.
Desai immediately stopped the vehicle and reported the matter to the police.
Tension gripped the area after several residents gathered on the site demanding immediate intervention by authorities to put a complete stop to the movement of heavy vehicles.
Vidyanagar Residents Welfare Association President Eddie Fernandes also arrived at the site and tried to bring the situation under control, while pacifying the agitated residents who had blocked the trailer. Police arrived on the site and also summoned a representative of a company involved in the transportation of the crane.
At about 10.30 pm, Nandini Desai, her father, Maruti, Wilfred and Eddie Fernandes headed to the Birla police outpost, where Desai demanded a halt to movement of heavy vehicles in the residential area, which also has a college in the vicinity.
The police sub inspector present at the outpost fined the driver of heavy vehicle and ordered the company’s representative to place two of its employees at the MES junction and also down towards the other entry point near the Masjid to divert
their vehicles.
The PSI assured to place a constable to divert heavy vehicles from proceeding through the colony, while on their way to project sites in the area.
