Prime Minister Narendra Modi will land in Goa today (Sunday) to lay the foundation stone for the greenfield international airport at Mopa and Electronic System Design & Manufacturing (ESDM) cluster in Tuem.
The official function is scheduled to be organised at the Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Stadium, Taleigao where Modi will address a gathering of about 10,000 people.
This is Modi’s second visit to Goa in a month. Previously, he was in Goa to attend the two-day BRICS summit held on October 15 and 16.
The function will also be attended by Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar, Union Minister for Information Technology Ravi Shankar Prasad, Union Minister for Civil Aviation Ashok Gajapathi Raju Pusapati, Anion AYUSH Minister Shripad Naik and South Goa MP Narendra Sawaikar, among others.
Ahead of the function, Parrikar and Parsekar held a meeting to review the arrangements for the function, which was attended by Chief Secretary RK Srivastava and officials of the departments concerned.
Speaking to media persons after the meeting, Parsekar said, “All preparations are moving in the right direction. All the arrangements will be done by tonight (Saturday). The decorations in the stadium may continue till 3 am. We have just taken a review meeting. All the required security arrangements have been done. We are eagerly waiting for the Prime Minister to arrive in Goa.”
Modi will land at the Dabolim airport directly from Japan, 10 minutes before schedule.
Thereafter, the State Government has made arrangements to either fly him by a chopper or by road to the venue of the function.
“He will land at Dabolim. He may either use a chopper or carcade to come to the venue. We are prepared for both,” said Parsekar.
Parsekar also informed that the State Government has issued 10,000 invitation cards to the people.
“We have asked those attending the function to produce the card for entry at the venue as only single person will be allowed per card. There is excitement among the karyakartas about his visit but we had to limit ourselves to only 10,000,” he said.
Modi will be in Goa for two hours after which he will leave for Belagavi and thereafter to Pune.
Parsekar also said that Modi is unlikely to make any election related announcements during his address after laying the foundation stone.
“This is a government function and not the party’s election campaign meeting. So I don’t expect him to make any announcement related to elections,” he said.
The State BJP is expecting about 100-200 of their party workers from every constituency to attend the function. To manage the crowd, 250-plus traffic personnel will be deployed at the venue.
“About 200 buses are expected to ferry passengers from various constituencies. Additionally, people will come on their four and two-wheelers too,” said an official.
The State Government on November 8 has already signed a concession agreement with GMR Airport Limited for development of Mopa airport and the first phase of the airport is likely to be operational by 2020. As regards ESDM Tuem is concerned, the Centre has already sanctioned an amount of Rs 72 crore for its development.
