Goa Congress Pradesh Election Committee on Friday continued its deliberation over selection of party candidates for the 2017 Assembly polls. Each Assembly segment was taken up individually for consideration by the PEC with the list of candidates submitted by the District Congress Committees coming under heavy scrutiny against the criteria set by PEC.
Speaking after the meeting, All India Congress Committee general secretary in-charge of Goa Digvijaya Singh stated, “Preference will be given to new faces while filtering the present names before forwarding the list to the Central Election Committee of AICC.”
Hinting that the sitting MLAs, who have expressed their wish to remain with the party, would be safe in the race for tickets, Singh pointed out, “Dabolim MLA has made his stand quite clear by now and Pandurang Madkaikar is presently making conflicting statements and is sending mixed signals.”
Referring to the Monserrate power couple, Singh further said, “Jennifer Monserrate is with us. Babush, however, has yet to clarify his stand to us. We have not deliberated on the matter as of now. If someone makes an application or initiates talks, we might consider it.”
It was announced that the Congress election manifesto committee has been constituted and will begin meeting people to understand their issues.
Singh disclosed that the party has planned a padyatra from North to South of Goa and will be flagged off on November 19. The march will mark the beginning of the India Gandhi birth centenary celebration.
In addition to this, the national executive of the National Students Union of India will arrive in Goa for its three day-long deliberative session from November 23 to 25.
Meanwhile, the senior Congressman came down heavily on the BJP-led state government and declared that efforts will be made to expose non-implementation of poll promises by the ruling party.
Congress also expressed fear of total collapse of governance with the steady increase in pendency of dues to contractors owing to the mounting debts.

Lambasting the Modi government for being ill-equipped to deal with its own policy, AICC general secretary Digvijaya Singh said that the BJP-led Central government’s move to demonetize currency is primarily to hide its mammoth failure in getting back black money that is stashed away in real estate, foreign tax havens and in gold and jewelry.
“This move is mainly to hide BJP’s failure to streamline the black money in real estate, foreign tax havens and gold and jewelry. The government has taken this step without much preparation,’ he observed adding that even the UPA government had demonetized currencies during its tenure but in a manner which did not affect the routine life of majority.
Stating that demonetisation has caused misery all over the country as not enough precautions were adopted to ensure a smooth exchange of notes, Singh condemned the move of the Central government.
“Without resolving pressing, pending issues of the people, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has flown to Japan on a state visit even while the country has descended into chaos,” he said.
Singh criticised the government for inconveniencing the poor masses and middle class. “Rich don’t deal in cash. Migrant labour, in particular, receive their weekly wages in these two currency notes. Hence, it is wrong to believe that these larger denominations are only in the hands of the rich,” he said.
