As the city’s imposing landmarks around the Margao Municipal garden Square “ the heritage Margao Municipal building and the old Collectorate building, finally receiving attention, the heritage structure housing the Margao post office lies in a state of neglect and apathy.

It’s now years since the colour on the heritage structure had worn off. Now, believe it or not, the roof tiles on the post office building are falling down for want of upkeep and maintenance.

Centrally-located on the northern side of the Margao Municipal square, the Margao post office building has been the commercial capital’s major landmark. Despite space constraints, the post office has been functioning from the heritage building over the decades, catering to the requirements of not only Madgavkars, but Saxttikars as well.

Sadly, the heritage building housing the post office seemed to have not kept pace with the changing times. Leave alone the space factor and manpower constraints, the very structure housing the post office has been craving for attention, but in vain.

Citizens fear that the roof tiles at  the entrance to the building might come crashing down on visitors to the post office. For, one can see with the naked eye that a couple tiles are precariously hanging on the roof, while some of the tiles have already come down.

When The Goan tried to find out from postal officials whether there’s any plan to refurbish and spruce up the heritage Margao post office building, an official said the higher ups are seized with the matter.

In fact, a postal official pointed out that the department has sanctioned a project to replace the electrical fittings inside the building, adding that the building may undergo repairs and receive a fresh coat of paint only after the work on electrical fittings is completed.

“All I can say is that the postal higher ups are seized of the state of the Margao post office building. Right now, the plan is to replace the electrical fittings. May be after that, the department may take up the repairs and painting of the building. You may get more details on the building repairs from the postal higher ups", informed an official.

With the Margao Municipal heritage building being decked up by the civic body by painting the original brick red colour and the Old Collectorate building also receiving a fresh coat of paint, the heritage Margao post office structure may have to wait for its round of a fresh coat of paint.
