In effect, it means that the matter will be heard after the panchayat polls are conducted, but leaves a leeway for the Calangute panchayat to continue with its challenge and can even challenge the election victories of the winning candidates.
Speaking to The Goan, Joseph Sequeira, a member of the Calangute panchayat said that the panchayat has objected to the shifting of members between the wards as well as the reservations declared for his panchayat.
“Some voters were put in other wards. The wards were not geographically contiguous and voters were moved around. We also had an issue with the ward reservation,” Sequeira told The Goan.
He said that despite the initial setback, the case would continue to be heard. “We can still appeal against those who win and seek that they be disqualified,” he said.
The Calangute Panchayat had sought a stay on the electoral process, always going to be a difficult demand for the Court to meet especially since the same court
has only last week asked the State government to hold the panchayat elections on or before June 12.
The State government has issued a notification of the delimitation of the wards in the panchayats.
