PANAJI: Heavy rain late on Sunday evening flooded streets and roadside shops across Panaji after the downpour coincided with a high tide in the Mandovi river. Mayor Rohit Monserrate said the combination of heavy rain and high tide prevented rainwater from draining properly, leading to flooding in several parts of the city. “The combination of high tide and heavy rain resulted in the flooding of the city,” Monserrate told reporters.
He said the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) had submitted a proposal for works in Patto to the finance department, but it was rejected. He added that major works, including road closures near the KTC bus stand, can only be carried out after the monsoon. Monserrate said repairs to areas that can be attended to immediately will begin on Tuesday. He also apologised to shopkeepers affected by the flooding.
