A couple of houses came crashing down in Salcete last night after the taluka was lashed by incessant rains accompanied by gusty winds.

The fire brigade also received half a dozen calls of uprooted trees coming down on houses, compound walls and on roads since last night.

Inmates of a residential house at Ambelim, near the Panchayat ghar, had a miraculous escape after a portion of the house came crashing down last night.

In another incident, a residential  house located at Old market collapsed last night following the incessant rains. The occupants of the house escaped unhurt.

Meanwhile, Margao Fire brigade rushed to attend to several calls on Thursday as uprooted trees crashed on houses and on roads.

A house in the Margao city suffered extensive damage after a mango tree crashed on the house, causing loss of over Rs 60,000.

The fire personnel also cleared several trees fallen on the roads and compound walls in Salcete taluka, informed Fire Officer Gill D’Sa.

Meanwhile, Paroda was back in the news again after local residents had to  literally wade through waist deep water to make it to the other side of the village.

In fact, the main Margao-Quepem road passing through the village, besides the internal roads, have been inundated again due to the overnight incessant rains. Last month, the main road at Paroda lay submerged under water for a couple of days, only bringing to the fore the failure of the authorities resolve the long standing issue of waterlogging and inundation of the main road during monsoons.

Residents were seen wading through waist deep water with belongings after the road was rendered unmotorable because of inundation.
