With an unusually large number of students passing SSC exams this year, Higher Secondary Schools (HSS) in the State are faced with a problem of providing admissions to all students and there are fears that students may not get admissions as these HSSs are virtually full.
Speaking to The Goan, heads of some higher secondary schools said they have been compelled to grant admission to more students than their capacity and problems would arise when physical classes resume as available infrastructure would not be sufficient for these extra students.
"The education department has allowed higher secondary schools to accommodate 10-15 additional students more than the actual capacity. Despite admitting these extra students, a number of other students are also seeking admissions,” said the head of one higher secondary school in Bardez.
Another head of a higher secondary school estimated there could be over 100 students in Bardez alone who would struggle to find admissions, as the higher secondary schools are virtually full.
When contacted, an education department official said the department was now aware of reports that higher secondary schools were full and that, there were surplus students seeking admissions.
“The education department is yet to get the final figures of admissions and these figures will be available only one month after students actually join the schools. This is because many students have enrolled in multiple schools or in multiples streams as backup and it is not possible to ascertain get the final figures at this moment,” said the official.
“Once students finalise the school and stream, some seats will automatically be vacant. Besides, there are around 2,000 seats for polytechnic courses.”
He appealed to students and parents not to panic if they did not secure admission.
“They can approach the zonal education offices and appropriate schools will be suggested for them to secure admission. We will ensure that all students get admissions for further education,” the official added.
