Huge cache of gutka seized at Margao Railway Station

MARGAO: When Rajdhani Express chugged into the Margao railway station on Saturday, a number of passengers disembarked at. And, so was a huge consignment of banned Gutka.

In fact, in a major seizure, the Konkan railway police station on Saturday seized a huge consignment of Gutka, valued around Rs 23 lakh in the market.

The gutka was transported in 56 bags and the entire consignment is believed to have come in from Kota-Rajasthan. 

Acting on a tip-off, the Konkan railway police station headed by SP Sammy Tavares laid in wait for the consignment to arrive at the Margao railway station. The Police detained a clearing agent and interrogations have revealed that that the consignment had come in the name of Aman, Pravin and Amid to be delivered to a resident of Ponda.

SP Sammy Tavares told The Goan that the Konkan railway police had been working on clues that a consignment of gutka is likely to arrive by Rajdhani at the Margao railway station. “Accordingly, we had been waiting for the day for the consignment to land at the railway station. The clearing agent was immediately detained and inquiries revealed that the consignment had come from Kota-Rajasthan and it was to be delivered to the resident of Ponda”, he said.

The gutka was packed in 56 gunny bags. After the police opened the bags, they found that the gutka was wrapped in small plastic bags.

SP Tavares said the Konkan railway police has registered a case under section 87 of The Goa Public Health Act, 2005. 

The police exuded confidence of making arrests in the case in the case in a day or two.
