This Brahman Ghumti has a lot of significance to the Hindu community in Vasco as it is directly linked to Damodar temple, while the religious Bazarkaar Paar (mythological floats) on the occasion of Annual Damodar Bhajani Saptah begins from this spot.
A resolution to build and maintain the Ghumti, which has been at the site for several years, had been previously passed by the MMC.
According to sources, the Bhagwa flag at the Ghumti was damaged by some miscreants on eve of Dusshera and a written complaint was filed by locals with the Vasco police on October 1. The police then conducted a preliminary investigation, but on the next day, a police official informed the complainants that the Ghumti was illegal.
To the surprise of locals, the Bhagwa Flag was missing from the Ghumti the same day. Messages about the missing Bhagwa Flag went viral on social media, with some even alleging that the Bhagwa Flag was removed by Vasco police.
The Hindu Samaj convened a meeting on October 6 and it was decided to reinstall the Bhagwa Flag after a peaceful rally and seek the blessing of Lord Damodar. The Bhagwa Flag was then reinstalled at the Ghumti on Saturday.
"If anything is illegal about the Ghumti, the police should inform the deputy collector and he in turn will inform the MMC. The police official should be responsible enough not to create communal tension by taking such hasty decision which can affect religious sentiments," said an angry senior citizen at the site.
