PERNEM: A senior citizen from Pernem, Gopichund Apule will go on hunger strike on January 26 from 10 am to 5 pm to demand converting the Pernem Municipal Council (PMC) into panchayat.
Speaking to reporters, Apule said many hurdles can be seen in the development of Pernem Municipality and PMC does not get any schemes for the people. “If PMC is converted into panchayat, it will get all the schemes which would benefit poor people,” he added.
“As PMC falls into rural area, its financial situation is very weak. PMC staff do not get payment on time and people do not get any benefits. The conversion of PMC into panchayat is the long pending demand of the people,” said Apule.
Apule further said he will submit a memorandum to the Pernem deputy collector demanding the conversion of PMC into panchayat on January 25 and he will go hunger strike on January 26.
Meanwhile, Pernem Block Congress president Umesh Talvnekar has extended his support to Apule in his one-day hunger strike.
