The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) ship Apoorva, along with the Fisheries Department, conducted a special community interaction programme with the fishermen community of South Goa on the occasion of the upcoming World Environment Day (June 5). Personnel from Indian Navy also attended the event.
The programme was held at the Village Panchayat hall in Chicolna, Bogmalo, South Goa. The fishermen community was briefed about the importance of World Environment Day and the need to protect the environment. They were also told about the various ways in which they can contribute to environmental protection, such as by planting trees, using energy-efficient LED bulbs, conserving water, reducing, reusing, and recycling, and using fewer chemicals and fertilisers.
The fishermen community was also briefed about the importance of safety at sea. They were told about the importance of carrying a distress alert transmitter (DAT), sufficient life-saving equipment, such as lifebuoys and life jackets, and the Coast Guard SAR helpline number. They were also told about the importance of manning the VHF distress channel at all times.
The programme was well-received by the fishermen community. They thanked the Indian Coast Guard, Navy and Fisheries Department for organising the programme and for raising awareness about environmental protection and safety at sea.
