The issue of Special Status for Goa was revived by the Aam Admi Party (AAP) when its national leader Dr Kumar Vishwas said the AAP would ensure that Goa get special status if it came to power in the State.

He was addressing a public meeting near the Hanuman temple in Porvorim on Friday evening.

“When Defence Minister Manohar Parriker was leader of the opposition in Goa, he had assured the electorate during the 2012 assembly elections that if his party came to power, it would strive to get special status to Goa. He has done nothing to fulfill this promise to the electorate," he said.

“Moreover, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently visited Goa to lay the foundation stone for the Mopa airport, neither the Raksha Mantri nor Goa's Chief Minister placed their demand of special status before the Prime Minister,”said Vishwas.

He informed that AAP would need to establish its existence in at least three states, for it to be recognized as a national party.

“In the ensuing election in Punjab, AAP will certainly get absolute majority. Hence, all eyes are focused on elections in Goa. It is now the responsibility of Goans to secure absolute majority for AAP and make it a national party,” said Vishwas.

Vishwas claimed that the State government was reluctant to act against casinos as they yield substantial revenue, which helps the BJP run the government.

“Casino culture will spoil the youth of Goa. If AAP comes to power, it will close down casinos in Goa and make Goa casino and drug free,” assured Vishwas.

Alleging that corruption was rampant in Goa, Vishwas said that several hundred crores of rupees were being spent on construction of bridges.

“In Delhi, AAP has built bridges within Rs 250 crore, whereas the cost of the third Mandovi bridge will touch Rs 1000 crore by the time it is completed and this is wasteful expenditure,” he added.

Commenting on the demonetisation of Rs 1000 and Rs 500 notes, Vishwas claimed that the main aim of the demonetisation issue was to make the banks richer.

“The Banks had written off loans to the tune of several thousand crores of rupees of several big businessman. If the government had made efforts to recover the outstanding dues of these defaulting business tycoons, there would not have been any need for demonetisation,” said Vishwas.

AAP candidates Rajesh Volvoikar (Porvorim), Pradeep Padgaonkar (Saligao) and Valmiki Naik (Panaji) also spoke at the meeting.
