Illegal sale of petrol: 10 held in Calangute

MAPUSA: Calangute Police arrested 10 persons in connection with illegal sale of petrol and petroleum products in Calangute.
According to reports, in a crackdown on Saturday and Sunday, police raided nine places and registered nine offences under Section 285 of Indian Penal Code and 10 persons were arrested. A total of 105 litres of petrol worth about Rs 8000 has been seized by the police which will be sent to Forensic Science Laboratory for chemical analysis.
The accused have been identified as Jyoti Santosh Shinde (35) from Gaurawado-Calangute, Irshad Shabbir Ahmed (33) from Umtawado-Calangute, Valerial Domingoes Britto (50) from Ashvem, Naga Deva Ram (27) from Naikawado-Calangute, Mallapa Fakirappa Kholkar (19) from Umtawado-Calangute, Deepak Manohar Candolkar (36) from Wadi-Candolim, Ravi Govind Chavan (28) from Esquiravvado-Candolim, Anthony Pereira (44), Ashok Buddhu Rathod (34) and Kamar Raja Khan (22) from Candolim. They were later released on bail.
Police have targeted the persons who are selling petrol in plastic bottles in their shops and carts.
PI Jivba Dalvi informed that the drive to curb the illegal sale of petrol will continue till the jurisdiction is made free from such activities.
Sources informed that many shopkeepers have themselves stopped selling the petrol, fearing legal action in the wake of this surprise crackdown.
