The Goa River Sand Protectors Network has informed the Bombay High Court at Goa that they have noted substantial progress in cracking down on illegal sand mining operations in the State prompting the court, which has been hearing the matter since 2018 to considering disposing of the petition if the government authorities continue to maintain the momentum.

“In order that this momentum to continue, we now post the matter on 18.03.2024. If the implementation continues as it is now reported, we will consider disposing of this petition,” the High Court bench of Justices MS Sonak and MS Jawalkar said.

On Monday, Adv Norma Alvares who represented the network of activists who were fighting against sand extraction, told the Court that orders issued by the High Court were being complied with and the action plan by the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police is being duly implemented.

“After a long time, we too are satisfied that there is an implementation of the action plan and various directions issued by us from time to time to ensure that unauthorised sand mining does not go on in the State of Goa,” the High Court bench of Justices MS Sonak and Valmiki Menezes Sa  said.
