“The council should implement its resolution to demarcate and earmark pay parking slots in and around the market area,” said Ashish Shirodkar, president, MMA while addressing a news conference in Mapusa.
He said the council could achieve a target of 150 four-wheelers and 800 two-wheelers slots around the market complex for parking.
“If used for an average of 2 hours for each vehicle in a 12-working hour of the day, you will be able to accommodate 4,800 two-wheelers @ Rs 5 (Rs 24,000 per day) and 900 four-wheelers @ Rs 10 (Rs 9,000 per day),” he said and added that the council could earn more than Rs 1 crore per annum.
He said the council should implement pay parking system on a trial basis in the next seven days before a final tender is awarded.
Congratulating the MMC for its swift action against the menace of daily vendors, MMA has now urged the council to take action against those who have set up shops vacated by owners rehabilitated some time ago.
“MMC had accommodated over 50 owners who had shops in road widening areas in the market as part of rehabilitation scheme (High Court directive). Surprisingly, we have noticed that makeshift stalls/kiosks/banca fixas are encroaching on the same vacated spaces whose previous occupants have been compensated,” Shirodkar said.
He said the municipal council should view this seriously and take preemptive action against such shop owners whose action amounts to contempt of court.
The MMA president further said the new sopo contract for 2017-18 should clearly demarcate vending zones in the tender document.
“Exact number of slots available for vendors in each zone should be mentioned in the tender document,” he said.
He said each vending slot should not exceed 1 mt x 1.5 mt, and the vendors should not block access to shops. He further said only those possessing registered ID cards issued by MMC should be allowed to sit.
