Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Saturday said, import of eggs
into Goa from neighbouring States will be permitted but the ban
on transporting chicken will continue.
However, importers of eggs will have to produce the "safety
certificate" of the poultry from where they are sourced, he said.
Sawant also said that the ban on importing chicken will continue
for now as there have been cases of 'bird flu' reports from some
places in Karnataka and Kerala.
Based on reports of the Veterinary departments of Goa and the
neighbouring States as well as directions from the Central
ministry, a decision on whether or not to lift the chicken import
ban will be taken by the State government in the next few days.
However, there is no ban on the sale of locally bred chicken, he
added.
Meanwhile, on the question of sale of fresh fish, Sawant said the
government has no objection to it being delivered or sold door-to-
door.
Goechea Ramponkarancho Ekvott (GRE) had earlier this week
questioned the government's decision the bar sale of fish in
markets.
GRE and a host of other fishing community organisations, NGOs
and individuals have sought a financial package to alleviate the
sufferings of hundreds of fish workers and members of the fishing
community whose livelihoods have been lost due to the lockdown.
Meanwhile, Sawant spoke tough on landlords who try to evict
their tenants. “If anybody tries to evict labourers or students or
any other person living on rent, government will take penal action
against the house owner under Disaster Management Act”, he
said.
