What could be termed as one of the firsts in the history of the Indian Armed Forces, as many as 4,000 women are expected to take part in an army recruitment rally for women being conducted for the first time in the country in Belagavi.
The rally will be held from July 22-27, for which the district and army authorities have started elaborate preparations.
Col Pranit Dayal from the Indian Army said a women’s army recruitment rally is being held and Belagavi with its excellent infrastructure has become the natural choice for the recruitment process.
Candidates from Goa, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra, and Maharashtra are expected to attend.
“We are expecting a participation of over 4,000 candidates in this rally,” he said.
Belagavi, which is also identified the ‘Cradle of Indian Infantry’, is known for its Maratha Light Infantry Regimental Centre (MLIRC) and the Commando Training Center.
Presiding over a preparatory meeting, Deputy Commissioner S B Bommanahalli said the women’s army recruitment rally is being held at four other cities, Ambala, Lucknow, Jabalpur and Shillong, with Belagavi being first one among them. The recruitment rally will be held at Shivaji ground of the MLIRC.
“I have also urged senior officials to depute staff from various departments to coordinate with defence authorities in the process of verification of caste and educational certificates of the candidates during the rally,” Dr Bommanhalli informed.
Accordingly, centres would be set at the city bus terminus and railway station, to facilitate the women candidates coming from other districts and states to guide them.
The deputy commissioner has also directed officials concerned to provide proper transportation, drinking water, medical facility, power supply to all the candidates during the rally.
Instructions also have been given to the police officers to depute police to ensure that the rally is held smoothly.
