Davorlim panchayat’s initiative to enforce the ban on plastic in the village suffered a setback after miscreants tore down the banners put up by the panchayat at the dark sports warning violators of Rs 5,000 fine.
Two days after the panchayat put up banners across the village warning violators of fine, miscreants tore down a couple of banners, evoking condemnation from the Sarpanch Sahar Sheikh, who has disclosed plans to lodge a complaint with the Maina-Curtorim police to bring the culprits to book.
The panchayat, however, appeared undeterred by the episode as evident by the fact that the gram sabha meeting on Sunday has adopted a resolution to impose fines on all persons found violating waste at the dark spots.
The sarpanch went a step further and said the panchayat would first clean up the dark spots and then hand over the spots to a private security engaged by the panchayat body. “At today’s gram sabha, we have decided to impose fines on violators dumping waste at the dark sports. We have approved a proposal to engage security personnel to man the dark sports. We intend to put up more banners across the village spreading awareness amongst the villagers on the plastic ban and also hire a propaganda vehicle to move around the village highlighting the ban,” he said and added, “Plastic cups, straws and other plastic items will be banned in the second phased of the operation.”
