The first phase of multipurpose sports complex at Socorro is nearing completion and will be inaugurated in October.
This was stated by Tourism Minister and Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte after inspecting ongoing work at the sports complex on Friday, in the presence of GSIDC Managing Director Rohit Kadam and General Manager (civil) Dilip Joshi.
They inspected work on the gym, badminton court, table tennis court, squash courts, library etc. and issued instructions to the contractor to expedite the pending works. Socorro Sarpanch Soniya Pednenkar, panch Members Maya Keni and Rajendra Parsekar were also present during the inspection.
Later speaking to media persons, Khaunte said that work on the multipurpose sports complex had started in 2015 and is nearing completion.
“In the third week of September, one more review meeting will be held to take stock of the situation. The first phase of this project consisting of swimming pools, gym, badminton court, squash and table tennis areas will be made available to public in October,” said Khaunte.
Commenting on the second phase of the project, Khaunte said facilities such as Futsal, Pickle ball, etc. will be made available to youth of Porvorim constituency.
“Since this is a large complex with state-of-art facilities, maintaining it will be a big challenge. I will discuss the issue of maintenance with the GSIDC and Socorro panchayat, before finalising the matter,” said Khaunte.
The foundation stone for this project was laid on February 25, 2013 and the estimated cost of this project at the time was Rs 34.50 crore.
The project was expected to have been completed by April 30, 2015. However, a number of contractors left the project midway and the project got delayed by 10 years.
