“Rise in online banking transactions is bound to give rise to online frauds. The root cause of financial frauds is financial greed. All these recent frauds are financial frauds and they merely are presented differently and in different ways,” he stated.
DGP Chander was speaking at an awareness programme on ‘Online Financial Frauds and its prevention’ organised by Cyber Crime Police Station on Tuesday in Panaji.
Chief Secretary R K Srivastava added to this and cautioned the audience that with technological advancements, criminal minds will also begin their research of the modes of online transactions.
He informed that over the last one year, around 70 citizen services have gone online in Goa with the payment gateways being taken to each doorstep. “Presently, only two per cent of monetary transactions are online and the rest are conducted through cash in the country. However, we in Goa are trying to go cashless by December 31,” he stated.
The Chief Secretary further said that there is no better safeguard against these frauds than education and mass awareness. “Don’t entertain suspicious individuals who promise sudden huge monetary gains,” he said.
At the event, Goa Police unveiled a booklet on recent common methods adopted by criminals to cheat citizens.
The booklet comprises short passages on frauds through phone calls, credit cards, social media, over the pretext of gifts, marriage sites, online jobs, websites, insurance policy maturity amount transfer and others such as cheating over story of finding treasures and offers of cheap loans with no surety.
After going through the booklet, Srivastava urged the DGP and Goa Police to publish the booklet in Konkani, Marathi and Hindi as well so as to reach the masses at large.
