Stating that migrants belonging to the labour class from other States were descending at the Tivim railway station in droves, Porvorim MLA Rohan Khuante said the government should put a proper tenancy verification system in place.

“On July 22, a large number of people from the labour class came in Train No. 12742 and got down at the Thivim railway station. It has caused fear and anxiety in the minds of the Goans,” Khaunte said at the Zero Hour.

He said these were the same migrants who after some time buy land in the State and build homes.

“Most of the crimes like rapes, murders etc in the State are committed by these outsiders. We need to bring some control on the influx of such people in the State,” he said.

Responding the Independent MLA’s concern, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said he has issued instructions to officials concerned to verify the train and the whereabouts of the labour that arrived on that train.

“I have also asked the Labour Commissioner to find out how many employees have been recruited in various industries in the State and how many of them are Goans and how many non-Goans,” Sawant said.

It may be recalled that a video of large number of migrants crossing the footbridge after disembarking at Tivim railway station went viral on July 22.

Sources told The Goan that it was the Patna-Vasco train and these labourers arrive in the State every Monday.

Participating in the discussion, Benaulim MLA Churchill Alemao said 80 percent of the staff recruited in casinos were people from other States and Goans comprised the remaining 20 percent.

“It should actually be the other way round where 80 percent of staff on casinos should have been Goans,” Alemao said. The CM informed the House that he will look into the matter.
