MARGAO:

The Konkani stage fell silent with the passing of veteran drummer Ivo Furtado of Benaulim, who died on October 6, leaving behind a rich musical legacy spanning several decades. He was 59.

Born on November 29, 1966, Furtado was a familiar and respected figure in Goa's tiatr fraternity. His funeral was held on Wednesday, October 7, and was attended by a large number of tiatrists, musicians, artistes, friends and admirers, who gathered to bid farewell to a musician who had contributed immensely to Konkani theatre.

Furtado was associated with the troupe of renowned tiatrist Roseferns for more than two decades, performing the music for numerous tiatrs and earning recognition for his distinctive drumming.

Tiatr Academy of Goa president Anthony Barbosa mourned his death, describing it as a major loss to the fraternity.

“Ivo was an inspiration to many young drummers. It is a great loss to the tiatr fraternity to lose such a great drummer. Goa has produced many talented musicians, and Ivo was among those who made a lasting contribution,” Barbosa said.
