Getting a new low-tension electricity connection in Goa could soon become faster and less cumbersome.
The Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission (JERC) has proposed amendments to electricity supply regulations that would significantly reduce the time taken to provide new power connections and simplify procedures for low-tension (LT) consumers.
Under the draft regulations, distribution licensees, including the Goa Electricity Department, will no longer be required to carry out inspections or testing of electrical installations before releasing LT connections. Instead, consumers will be allowed to submit a self-certification of electrical safety in a prescribed format, reducing paperwork and speeding up approvals.
The proposed changes also introduce stricter timelines for providing new connections and approving load enhancements.
Where the existing power network is capable of supplying electricity, utilities like the Goa Electricity Department will have to provide connections within three days in urban areas, seven days in rural areas, and 15 days in rural island areas from the date of receiving a complete application.
For applications requiring network expansion, transformer augmentation or the creation of new substations, utilities will be required to complete the work and provide supply within 90 days.
The regulator has also proposed amendments to compensation provisions, aimed at addressing delays in providing services to consumers.
The proposal is expected to benefit households, small businesses and other LT consumers by cutting waiting periods and reducing procedural hurdles. It is also intended to improve service delivery standards and enhance accountability among power distribution agencies.
The JERC, meanwhile, has invited objections and suggestions from stakeholders on these draft regulations and members of the public are required to submit their views by October 19, this year via email at [email protected] or send written submissions to the Secretary, Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission, Udyog Vihar Phase-IV, Gurugram.
The proposed amendments will come into effect after the consultation process is completed and the final regulations are notified.
